Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion.

Yorgos Lanthimos

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos was nominated for an Oscar for the original screenplay to 2016’s The Lobster. It was his first English language film, and the first of his films to use well- known actors, including Colin Farrell and Léa Seydoux. His second feature, 2009’s Dogtooth, was a hit at Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar as the best foreign film. His other films include Kinetta (2005) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, with Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone).
