On April 16, 2023, the Armenian film industry celebrated its centennial milestone. To commemorate this occasion, the Tbilisi International Film Festival, in collaboration with the Armenian National Film Center will host screenings of Armenian films.
These films, spanning a century of cinematic heritage, delve into themes intricately linked to the fundamental issues shaping contemporary civilization. Armenian cinema uniquely navigates the confluence and occasional clash of Western and Eastern cultural paradigms. The narratives presented in these films resonate with the pressing and pertinent challenges of our times. They delve into universal topics such as world wars, genocide, colonialism, class oppression, cultural identity, and the struggle for women's rights from a peripheral perspective.
Recognizing the importance of critically assessing and re-evaluating the Armenian film heritage, the National Film Center of Armenia has undertaken the restoration of key films and curated a series of film programs. This initiative aims to showcase the central cultural direction of Armenian cinema to an international audience, offering a nuanced exploration of the intricate interplay between different cultural influences.
